Southeast Little League

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q:  How is Southeast Little League structured?
A:  The league is divided into six divisions – 50/70, Majors, Minors, CCP Major, CCP Minor and Rookies.

Q: Who is eligible?
A: Unless there's a special exception, you must live inside the Southeast Little League Boundaries (see map) which in Davenport are East side of Jersey Ridge Road, West, south of Locust street to College avenue, North to I-180 & South to Mississippi River; Bettendorf & Le Claire or attend a public or private school inside these boundaries in order to play in the SELL.

Q:  How is it determined which division they will play in?
A:  "Little League Age" is the primary determinant, but a “Skills Assessment” and “Draft” process is in place that creates variability based on skill level. In general:
    • 50/70: Age 13
    • Majors: Ages 10-12
    • Minors: Ages 8-10 (Player Pitch and includes some 11 year old players not selected for Majors)
    • CCP: Ages 6-8(Competitive Coach Pitch using Coach as pitcher but playing modified baseball rules to get players ready for Minors which is player pitch. Scores/Standings are kept and begins competitive play)
    • Rookies: Ages 4‐6 (Starts out as coach pitch with tee rescue. Emphasis is on introduction to baseball and basic skills development. No scores or standings are kept)

Q:  How do I determine the "Little League Age" for my child?
A:  Please review this Chart.

Q:  Can I request my 10 or 11 year-old play in the Minors or Majors?
A:  Yes.

Q:  Does my child have to participate in a Skills Assessment?
A:  Skills Assessments are MANDATORY for Majors, Minors and CCP players. Rookies players will be assigned to their teams. There are two different dates available to accommodate schedule conflicts. See the information on tryouts.

Q:  How is it determined which team my child plays on?
A:  After the Skills Assessment, the teams are selected by the coaches through a draft process.  The Majors hold their draft first, followed by Minors and then CCP.  The remaining players, ages 6 and under, for Rookies will be divided evenly with the goal of having 10-12 kids per team.

Q: What are the current bat regulations?
A:  As of January 1, 2018, the USA Baseball Bat Standard was implemented. Little League-approved baseball bats that were approved for use for the 2017 season or before are no longer be acceptable for use in any Little League game or activity. For a complete list of bats approved through the USABat Standard, visit usabat.com.  The League will provide approved bats for the Rookie & CCP Divisions.

Q: If I want to buy my child their own bat, what is recommended?
A:  The bat must meet the USA Baseball Bat Standard.  The League will provide approved bats for the Rookie & CCP Divisions.  The sizes we are recommending depend largely upon the size of the child and are only a guideline.  Traditionally, Minor League players use bats weighing 16‐19 oz. and are about 28” long.  Major League players typically use bats weighing 18‐22 oz. and are about 30” long.  For a complete list of bats approved through the USABat Standard, visit usabat.com.

Q:  Are there any special requirements if I want to help at practices or be an assistant coach?
A:  Yes. Little League requires that a background check be performed.  If you are interested in volunteering, please complete a Volunteer Application Form and provide a copy of your photo ID.  Upon us receiving word of your clearance, you may begin helping the team.

Q:  How long does the season last?
A:  The 50/70, Majors, Minors & CCP season runs about 9-11 weeks(middle of April – June). The Rookie season runs about 5-6 weeks(May-June). Schedules will be posted to the SELL website prior to the start of the season.

Q. Where are games played?
A: The Southeast Little League Fields are located within Prairie Heights Park at 5600 Eastern Avenue, Davenport. We have three Little League Approved Fields with lights, bullpens and covered dugouts. Our fields also have two outdoor batting cages as well as a new 50’x70’ building with three batting cages as well as storage for our equipment.

Q: How many games will the kids play in a season?
A:
    • Rookie Division generally play 8-12 regular season games.
    • CCP Division generally play 12-15 regular season games as well as participate in the Davenport City Single Elimination Tournament, and Southeast Little League end of season tournament.
    • Minors Division generally play 12-15 regular season games as well as participate in the Davenport City Single Elimination Tournament, and Southeast Little League end of season tournament.

• 50/70 Division generally play 14-16 regular season games against other 50/70 teams in the BPV 13-14 yrs old division.

Q: What days are games played?
A: For the 2024 Season the SELL Board of Directors have approved Majors to play on M&W, Minors on T&TH, CCP on M-W-F and Rookies M-W-F. We will try to reserve Fridays(but not guaranteed) and weekends for Make-up games due to inclement weather during the week.

Q.  How often, and where, will the kids practice?
A: Prior to the beginning of the season, teams will usually practice a couple of times during the week and once on the weekend. However, this can vary due to the individual manager's particular schedule. You should expect practices to last a minimum of 1.5 hours. The League will schedule preseason practices at the SELL fields. However, due to limited time, weather and number of teams Managers will hold practices at locations in Davenport & Bettendorf. In addition to field practice, many managers will often schedule a batting cage practice. During the season, practices will likely not exceed once per week, but that choice is at the manager's discretion.

Q.: When will the practices begin?
A: Practices will begin around the middle of March.

Q: What equipment does a player need before the first practice or game?
A:
The registration fee provides:
Jersey
Cap

Players must provide their own:

Standard GRAY baseball pants
Athletic supporter (Recommended by Little League for all players but a protective cup is required for Catchers)
Baseball Shoes (Strongly recommended for CCP, Minors & Majors)
Leather glove

League will provide each team:
Balls
Batting helmets
Catcher's gear
Bats(Rookie & CCP Divisions)

Players may use personally owned gear providing it is Little League approved. We strongly discourage Rookie & CCP Division Parents from purchasing bats as these divisions are instructional and the league has purchased bats specifically designed for use by these players.
